$5 Deal of the Day Giveaway

Post image for $5 Deal of the Day Giveaway

How’s your prayer life? Would you like to improve it?  Wouldn’t we all!  For the next 48 hours you can pick Paul Miller’s new book A Praying Life: Connecting With God in a Distracting World for about 5 bucks.   This offer expires at 5 PM (EST) on Saturday, April 25th.  Or it possibly might end if they run out of books!  So how about a chance for a free copy?

Yes, free.  I am going to give away two copies.   Before I get into the details of the giveaway check out the link above to see if this book is for you.  Check out the endorsements, table of contents and read the foreward by David Powlison.  Here’s my favorite endorsement.

“What a refreshing book! If you’re tired of religious prayer games and rote prayers that stop at the ceiling or if you have suspected that God was on vacation somewhere, this book will change your life. And if you’re thinking about giving up on prayer, don’t! At least not until you’ve read this book. When you have, you’ll thank me for recommending it to you.”
- Steve Brown, professor, Reformed Theological Seminary

Why A Giveaway?

Recently, Tony Kummer released the new site Devotional Christian which is an excellent resource for prayer and devotion.  This inspired me to some extent to put up a Prayer Page.  This book is a perfect addition to these two recent developments.  I don’t believe you can ever pray too much.  Many people struggle with prayer.  So I decided I’d give away two of these books.  I just felt like it.

The Giveaway

To enter requires one thing*.

Post a comment below sharing something that’s been helpful to you in your prayer life.

*How can we praise God with you?  Share with us how God has worked through prayer in your life.  Do this and  I’ll enter you twice.  This can be as short as you like or as long (within reason) as you like.

This giveaway will end at 12 PM (EST), that’s noon, on Saturday, April 25th.  Then, I will have two drawings for the giveaway.  If you don’t win then you may still have time to buy the book yourself at the sale price.  If you win I will send the book to you or send it to someone as a gift if you like.

Grace and peace,

Mark

This looks like a great book and something our church should have, as a whole, my church needs to grow in our prayer lives.

I am praying that God decides whether this resource will benefit me and that his will is done though this contest! :)

The most powerful result of prayer in my life is the salvation and my wife and I. A lot of godly people prayed for a long time before I was blessed with faith and repentance. I played along a couple times at the request of my friend and said prayers like “God, if you are the God of the Bible, show yourself to me.” He did.

In my own prayer life, praying with others and hearing others pray has been the best help for me. I actually blogged on prayer last night because I was so impressed with the public prayer of Pastor Gervase Nicholas Edward Charmley: http://blog.witnessesuntome.com/2009/04/lesson-in-prayer.html

During my recent unemployment I realized that, if prayer were like meeting with my father for coffee, would I spend the whole time pleading the same thing, asking for the same thing? No, it’s ridiculous.

God knows our requests before we ask, and deals with His people in love, then why did I blatantly distrust Him by asking over and over again as if God didn’t hear? I now spend perhaps 10% of the time asking for what I need and I split the remainder of the time repenting for my lack of trust and repeating back to God his psalms to try conform my own mind and attitude.

I think that single metaphor (talking over coffee) highlighted how much faithless, trustless sin was in my prayer, and probably has been there for years.

I have more stories Lessons from Joblessness, but that’s the big one I’m still integrating into my life. :) God gave a verbal promise of a job recently, and I should have paperwork any day now. :)

By “verbal” I mean a person gave me a verbal promise and I credit God with the good that may come of it. Yikes. Should have re-read that before posting…

“Arrow prayers”. Bryan Chapell, in “Praying Backwards”, describes the concept of “arrow prayers”. Often in our busy schedules people ask us to pray for a particular need, but if we wait to add it to our prayer list it might get lost in the shuffle. By being in an attitude of prayer, and silently offering what Chapell calls an “arrow prayer” at the same time that the request is being shared, we can be assured that we have honored our agreement to pray for them.

Jerry,

I take a similar approach. I do not typically write down prayer requests. I stop and pray right away when something needs prayer. Then the issue may be mentioned in a later prayer depending on the issue and my memory. The only time I write down prayer requests is in public prayer time, particularily when I am leading a group in prayer so that I do not forget anyone’s lost family member of ailment, etc.

Blessings,
Jason

Congratulations Jason and Sam! I will be in touch so you can tell me where to send the book.

Jason, that is a great testimony of prayer. I’m glad showed Himself in a way you were able to see Him. At times people pray in such a manner, but they aren’t really looking.

Sam, love it! What you say is so very true. I think many of us struggle with just that perspective. We put ourselves in focus and God gets blurry. I would love to hear more.

Jerry, that’s a great thing to do, IMO. I try to pray right away if I tell someone that I am going to pray for them. If I don’t then what happens is what’s happened many times in the past…I just forget, etc. BTW, I love Dr. Chapell’s radio show “Living Christ 360”.

Kathy D, I’m very sorry. I only have two of these to give away right now. Is there anything in particular anyone here can pray for you about?

Grace and peace,

Mark

I pray in the morning instead of at night after climbing into bed. I was falling asleep too often while praying at night.
