Emir Caner recently spoke at Thomas Road Baptist Church. You can download it at – A Gospel Worth Preaching.
Paraphrasing Emir he said that God doesn’t send people to hell for their sins, but for their rejection of Christ.
John wrote at 16:8-9 “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me”
People are sent to hell for their sins of which even unbelief is.

Mark,
Yes, that is commonly heard in Arminian circles. Along with it foten comes that the “unpardonable sin” is not receiving Christ.
God doesn’t send people to hell for their sins, but for their rejection of Christ.
Thats a nice way to soften things a little. Really, why is Christ necessary? Because of our sins. And if we reject Christ, what happens to us? We go to hell. I would say then that we go to hell for our sins. Sure, the result of rejecting Christ is hell, but its a round about way of saying the thing.
rob,
Normally, it would be a round about way of saying the same thing except that he made the two mutually exclusive. It’s really a contradictory statement. He’s denied that sins in general send one to hell while affirming that one sin in the particular sends one to hell though in context the unbelief is excluded as a sin.
Therefore, he’s disagreeing with John who writes that unbelief is a sin.

Mark,
I don’t know how much trouble I’ll get into, but I had the opportunity to preach last Sunday where I attempted to correct that error our temporary Pastor has made. Although I think we may be in agreement now, I wonder how many people understood what was said last Sunday.
The apostle John I know of, but who is this Emir Caner?
