Blog bites: Remembering our past theological heros and the Joshua Convergence

A quick and dirty to the summary of my thoughts on the recent Joshua Convergence on the topic of gratitude. The speaker on this topic was local pastor Jeff Crook. Quoting from this article in the Florida Baptist Witness he comments.

“Gratitude and honor are inseparable,” Crook said. “To not give honor is to not be grateful and when there is an absence of honor, there will always be a presence of arrogance, pride and vain glory.”

“To fail to express gratitude and deny these men honor is glaring arrogance and profound ignorance,” added Crook. “There’s some young preachers tonight that need to put their hand over their mouth. We need to repent of our arrogance and fleshly spirit of ingratitude. That’s what’s keeping Holy Ghost revival from coming to our convention.”

How about how some of the very leaders I assume Mr. Crook is speaking of treat certain theological positions? The Founders of the SBC were for arguments sake Calvinists and were not abstainers as far as I know. So today we have some of these conservative resurgence leaders who have and do take pot shots at and misrepresent Calvinism. Then there is the current alcohol issue. Shall we disown men of the SBC past who used wine in communion and made whiskey? Do we honor them by alleging a life of willful sin to them because they used alcohol?

Which brings me to this: where is the uprising and outcry for the Founders of the SBC? Where is their respect and praises for the heroics of the SB faith? The next time that Calvinism is misrepresented and built up in a strawman position will these same folks come out against those doing it?

Seems to me in the context of the SBC the recent Joshua Convergence would need a little reworking so the founding heroes of the SBC can be upheld and looked up to.

I’m not saying we should narrow the tent to just Calvinists, for example, but I am asking for consistency.

R-e-s-p-e-c-t….just a little bit.

PS. Here is a correspondence worth reading between Paige Patterson and a gentleman by the name of Bruce Sabin. I have no idea who Mr. Sabin is at this point in time. This is a link I came across a while back that I sort of forgot about.
