Below is an excerpt from the introduction.
The modern missionary movement is rooted in the various branches of Reformation theology. It is based upon a genuine concern for the conversion of souls, the expansion of the church, and the establishment of the kingdom of God. Through the object of our study o…nly incidentally touches the influence of Roman Catholic missions of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, we can state that their work provided a stimulant and, in many cases, a worthy example to Protestant contemporaries. The roots of modern missions actually reach back into the early church, both as organic outgrowth and as pattern for emulation. Our concern is with one of the various roots of modern missions that is found in the seventeenth century.
The purpose of this study is to examine the theology of five Puritans in order to assess the relation of their theology to the practice of missions. Is there a relationship, or is what concern they had inconsistent with their basic theology? Is Puritanism, and pari passu, Calvinsim, basically a theology of the elect for the elect, or is it a theology of redemption for the world? What is the nature of the church: a fellowship of the redeemed, or an agent for salvation to the unredeemed? What is God’s purpose for the world; that is, what is in purview when we speak of redemption? Is it the conversion of souls, or the establishment of the elect church, or the achievement of the millennial kingdom of righteousness and peace?
