The Ground Zero Mosque An Artificial Controversy?

There has been some interesting back and forth in Christians and the Ground Zero Mosque. I’m not sure a consensus will ever be reached even by Christians. Meanwhile, a friend sent me an article that offers another perspective on the Ground Zero Mosque. It’s from the Independent Institute whose mission is to boldly advance peaceful, prosperous, and free societies grounded in a commitment to human worth and dignity.

The article is Histrionics Over the Mosque: Symbolism Crowds Out Reality by Ivan Eland. He opens with:

The American media, and to a lesser extent the world media, focus on symbolism at the expense of underlying reality. And sometimes they can’t even make sense of the symbolism. The artificially generated controversy over a proposed mosque within about two blocks of the site of the 9/11 attacks is illustrative of this ignorance.

Reading through, I found the following paragraph interesting.

Yet conservative opposition to building the mosque is based on ignorance. Even if erecting the mosque is insensitive to the pain of 9/11, which I would argue that it is not, the Constitution doesn’t require people or groups to be sensitive to others’ concerns in order to enjoy religious freedom. For example, some Christians hold Jews responsible for killing Christ, but that does not preclude Jews from worshiping freely in the United States. Furthermore, the mosque is being proposed by the Cordoba Initiative, which is dedicated to improving Western/Islamic relations and promoting interfaith dialogue, and the leading person behind the project is from the most liberal and tolerant group in Islam, the Sufis. Lastly, two long-standing mosques are already in the neighborhood of “ground zero.”

Read the whole thing. Is Mr. Eland being insensitive? Unrealistic? Or accurate in his assessment?

Come back and share your thoughts.

“Even if erecting the mosque is insensitive to the pain of 9/11, which I would argue that it is not”

Nor is a child molester moving in next door to a day care insensitive. Yet we have laws against it.

What a downright ridiculous argument. I’d like to know what this person is grounding such claims in.

“For example, some Christians hold Jews responsible for killing Christ, but that does not preclude Jews from worshiping freely in the United States.”

Well they certainly were but Judaism doesn’t condone such actions. Islam, on the other hand, does condone terrorist action.

“Furthermore, the mosque is being proposed by the Cordoba Initiative, which is dedicated to improving Western/Islamic relations and promoting interfaith dialogue”

This is a farce. Cordoba was the Muslim capital of Europe. It’s a symbol of conquest, people. They’re doing this to show the Muslim world that America is vulnerable and that vulnerability is found in the progressive’s lack of a backbone and love of political correctness.

If they were really dedicated to improving anything other than Islam’s goals then they’d never try what they are doing.

You have to be stupid, pardon the strong words, to think they care about improving relations with us dhimmis. Hasn’t anyone even glanced at Sharia law? Has anyone looked at the history of Muslim expansion? This is textbook!

“and the leading person behind the project is from the most liberal and tolerant group in Islam, the Sufis.”

Wow. Just wow. Has this person spent any time learning about Islam? Apparently not. Sharia and the Sunnah are seen as crucial for any Sufi aspirant.

“Liberal and tolerant Muslim” is an oxymoron. Islam is the definition of submission to Allah. Islam is Arabic for submission.

“Lastly, two long-standing mosques are already in the neighborhood of “ground zero.””

Key word: already.

Yes, we must overcome our ignorance of Islam. As well as next month’s anniversary of 9/11, there’s a more imminent though lesser known Islamic anniversary – the murderous child-rape orgy at Beslan in early September 2004.

Muslim terrorists killed and tortured countless victims. Young girls were raped with gun barrels and other objects. Children were forced to drink their own urine before being executed. And to make matters worse, the MSM tried to cover up all Islamic involvement, and have done so ever since.

Both anniversaries provide grim but necessary ‘teaching moments’ to educate the American people about Islam. We owe it to the victims to tell the truth and clear through the Islamic lies.

The 9/11 attack wasn’t an abberation caused by ‘militants’ who had hijacked the ‘peaceful religion’ of Islam. The attack was a direct consequence of standard Islamic teaching on the need to kill Harbis.

Terrorism and intimidation are essential features of Islam without which it cannot survive.

Similarly, the sadism and pedophilia of Beslan stem directly from the example set by the ‘Perfect Man’, the murdering, child-raping false prophet Mohammed.

In commemorating these anniversaries, we need to avoid just preaching to choir. We need to copy the tactics of the jihadists with their mosques in every town and ‘Think Globally, Act Locally’.

The blogosphere is fine for communicating globally with other Islamically Aware bloggers, but to reach the bulk of the people we also need to use local forums, online local news media, social networks etc.
