Where are the Charges Against The Gospel Project by Ralph Green via SBC Today?

On August 1, 2012, Southern Baptist Pastor Ralph Green was allowed a post on SBC Today. Green charged LifeWay’s new Sunday School curriculum, The Gospel Project, with being a tool to indoctrinate churches with Calvinism. No evidence was given by Green on the SBC Today blog though blog readers were told the proof was forthcoming.

No evidence has been given in attempt to substantiate the charges made against The Gospel Project by Green. I hope these types of accusations are not what is to come in Southern Baptist life.

Or is it too late? I digress.

Chris Roberts, another SBC pastor, continues wondering when Green will present his evidence. Roberts offers some thoughts of his own which begin below.

Two weeks ago today, SBC Today offered a post criticizing Lifeway’s new Sunday school curriculum, The Gospel Project. Many people have voiced concerns with this material due to the majority of its contributors being Calvinists. The criticism has been that with writers of this sort, the material can’t help but be Calvinist in nature and is most likely an attempt by Calvinists to covertly indoctrinate and convert the SBC to Calvinism.

The post presented two weeks ago was titled, “The Gospel Project: Not for Calvary Baptist Church” and contained a report from pastor Ralph Green who said that after his church received the material, they scrutinized it for Calvinistic teachings and “found it to be biased in how it explains and interprets the study themes. There are numerous subtle seeds of the Calvinistic approach to Scripture and many that are overtly obvious.” Throughout this post, Green offers no evidence of the subtle or overt Calvinistic teachings contained in the material. He never quotes it, never so much as hints at what is being taught other than claiming that the material is Calvinistic. He does take the time to take several swipes at Calvinism, though he uses no Scripture to back up his arguments and quotes no Calvinists when he says what Calvinists believe, in the process badly misrepresenting Calvinism (an all-too-common feature of anti-Calvinistic writings).

It is sad the by-word for antagonism and anti-Calvinist crusaderism that @sbctoday has become. I wait with everyone here to see the day when @sbctoday finally speaks to this matter one way or another...while NOT holding my breath.

Scott, are you sure you don't want to hold your breath?

Les, I'm not sure where the SBC Hooter is on this. :)

parsonsmike said, "very unChristian to accuse without backing it up with details in a TIMELY manner." Agreed. I'm sure Pastor Green would not accept this type of behavior toward him from his congregation.

Darryl Hill, right. Not only has there been no official word, but I know of atleast one person who is now not allowed to post comments on SBC Today due to asking questions about the evidence.

John, you're wrong! OK, maybe not. :)

That's ok. They said the same thing about the NIV update, even though most of the translators were complmentarians. Unless something is done the exact way they would like it, it must be wrong.

Hey Mark. I'm glad somebody is pointing this out. It's ridiculous to make an accusation such as this on the basis of ONE witness. It is entirely unscriptural. We are told not to even ENTERTAIN an accusation against an elder in our churches unless it is confirmed by 2 or 3 witnesses, yet this was not only entertained, it was branded as true when it was published by SBCToday.

I also note, when the forthcoming interview and explanation with Pastor Green did not come, it was stated "The interview portion of Pastor Ralph Green’s post will be delayed one day due to unforeseen and urgent responsibilities of SBCToday staff." When it didn't come the next day, we were put off yet again with... "SBCToday personnel remain indisposed with matters out-of-state. However, we want to reassure our readers that the interview with Pastor Ralph Green regarding his impressions of the Gospel Project curriculum will be posted at our earliest convenience." Since that time, there has been no official word on the matter from the site.

When I suggested something might be amiss with the whole situation, the reply was, "Do you want it to be amiss, Darryl? I’m out of town on other business and need to have more time to moderate the site when the post goes up. I can’t do that now. I’m taking a brief break now to eat lunch, and then back at other duties. We will post it when we can. Exercise the fruit of the Spirit, and please be patient with us. — Norm"

Since August 1st, 14 other articles have been posted and moderated. I don't know what is up. Perhaps the SBCToday staff is still indisposed out of state. It seems unlikely. Perhaps Bro. Norm's lunch took much longer than expected. Perhaps the interview took place and the actual examples Bro. Green gave in the interview were not substantial enough to print. Perhaps the examples of calvinistic indoctrination were simply misunderstandings on his part. Whatever the case, the honorable thing to do is to inform us about what has happened here. There were many who actually put their orders on hold waiting for the follow-up report. There were others who were considering returning based on their suggestion. They have not been given any further instruction. One guy asked such a question on one of the posts since that day, and I attempted to offer him an answer from my knowledge of TGP. I even cited quotes and named every man who was quoted in the first 4 sessions. I was accused of attempting to hijack a thread and then chided by Norm with, "Curious you didn’t mention ALL the notable quotables in the margins of TGP." So, apparently, they have studied it somewhat, they're just unwilling to give their evidence. The irony here is that my posts found in the comments here: http://sbctoday.com/2012/08/09/rite-of-passage-parenting-yes-jesus-loves-me/ represent the only actual content information regarding the Gospel Project on their entire site. And I was attempting to help a traditionalist brother out by pulling out the most reformed sounding quotes I could find in the first 4 sessions. He thanked me. SBCToday chided me. Oh well. One thing is certain from my perspective, I have decided not to waste anymore time attempting to explain and reason with folks there.

Apparently there has been little affect from Pastor Green's accusations on the movement of TGP, since they have too many orders for even the large projected first print. Either they want Calvinistic material or they trust Lifeway to give them Biblical material.

And as i said at Chris' site:

Chris said:

"My response was that the original post was meaningless without the

evidence. No accusation should be accepted without evidence (see, for

instance, 2 Corinthians 13:1), so Green’s accusations carried no weight without his specific concerns."

They did carry a load: the denouncing of those underhanded Calvinists trying to 'calvinize' the SBC. It shocked one pastor!

Now whether there is such bias in the TGP, I do not know.

But it is very unChristian to accuse without backing it up with details in a TIMELY manner.

Whoever broke this story and allowed it to go to print should respond and either bring forth details of the accusation or call Pastor Green on to the carpet if he is not willing to provide such details. Both Pastor Green and SBCToday have a responsibility here which its fulfillment is not only lacking but PAST lacking.

As I said at Chris' site, they apparently have nothing. This is not surprising. Imagine if this had happened at your blog or SBC Voices only in the other direction. And why is the west GA hooter not all over this story?
