Ethics: Pastor Throws Fit from Pulpit!

What would you do Wednesday!

Today’s post is a based on a true story. In fact, let’s use an actually story that has recently been making rounds. I’ve provided the text and video below.

The pastor is preaching Sunday morning. He pauses and throws a fit going into the following rant.

Son, don’t sleep when I’m talking. Hey, hey, hey! Don’t you lay your head ba..I’m important.  Now you might do your English teacher that way, but I’m not teaching English. I’m teaching eternal life. I love you. You know I love you. Have I convinced you that I love you?

Uh… yeah you better nod your head yeah. C’mon, put it up there. All right. You stay away and you listen to me. You say, “Well he may never come back.” Well, he ain’t here now!

And where have you been? Mr. Underwood. And i noticed on the calendar I’m supposed to marry y’all.  What makes you think I’d marry you? You’re one of the sorriest church members I have. You’re not worth 15 cents. And you want me to marry you to her? And you want to marry him? And you don’t even know where he belongs! And you don’t even know where you belong!

Now, let me tell everybody here how much I love these kids? Do you know I love you, sir? Stand-up big boy. Do you know i love you? Give me a little love. I’m the real deal. I know you are, but you ain’t been here.

You can get this in any of the church in town. I mean if y’all don’t want me we don’t have to have a church fight.  I’ll get my little Connie and we’ll get in her little Buick Enclave – it’s paid for -and we’ll sell what we need to sell. And we’ll go on down the road. And we’ll find some little podunk church that don’t know up from down. And I’ll find me a dozen Joe’s baskets who don’t have a pot or a window. And who will shout “Jesus” and I’ll give the rest of my life to them.

But I’m not interested in recreating the prostitute of the church Amen! You remember when i came here, Kelly? You remember where your wife was? Where your sisters were? You remember where they were? And we made holy war. Do remember that?

Stay with me, don’t quit me! Oh, Brandy. Oh, Brandy’s a sweet girl and she’s got her children. Yes, y’all are good and y’all are fine, but your children will turn on you if you don’t hold up the standard and the banner of God! And if they don’t turn on you you’ll just produce nice little Worleyians.

Are y’all keeping the camera on me back there and the little video room? Good. We’re having trouble in the video room. There’s no one finer than young Cox back there. And he comes down here spends hours in that thing, but he has a little attitude adjustment that we’re gonna fix. Brother Cox, you listening? Because brother Cox I can fix your  attitude adjustment.

I don’t care what your mama thinks and your daddy thinks. And i don’t have a better friend than your mama, but mama, you get out of my way when I’m messing with that boy because I’m his preacher. I’m yours when I’m talking to you. But I’m his when I’m talking to him!

And last I checked he’s a grown man. And that video room ain’t going to be a youth hang out! We might as well just fix this thing.  “Well, I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.” If you don’t know what you’re doing wrong, son, you don’t care about what I want to do right. Because if you loved me and you submitted to me, you’d know what my heart is and my messages is. And you wouldn’t go about establishing your own kingdom in the video room.

I really feel good now.

What would you do?

  • Get up and walk out.
  • Stay seated and silent.
  • Challenge the preacher.
  • Stand up and start calling out names with him.
  • Or….

Here I blog…

I might just do choice D if our church was in that situation. I don’t know.

1 Tim 3: is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do. overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money. must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?), not a new convert, so that he will not become conceited and fall into the condemnation incurred by the devil. he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he will not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
I would initiate church discipline toward this pastor, and record every single interaction on the topic.

I’m so ashamed just reading this and can’t get myself to watching the whole video.  I can’t imagine what damage this does to the church afterwards and to his pastoral ministry

I would get up and leave.  This yahoo has dishonored the pulpit and the ministry and besmirched the name of the Lord.  He needs to be disciplined and suspended from ministry for a time.

I would have walked out – but I’d like to think if I was “Mr. Underwood” I would have punched him in the nose, or at least given him a piece of my mind in front of the church for disrespecting my fiance in front of the church like that, and disrespecting me in front of my fiance.

The man takes himself very seriously, and it seems apparent that it’s acceptable to the people, whether they enjoy it or not. Sad, sad goings on.
I wouldn’t be part of this to begin with.

Wow, and to think that he is just up the road from me.  I might just have to make the trip up to his church and ask him if he forgot to take his happy pill before he preached that message, or if he had been to the Dr. to see if he had a brain tumor, or, if that was just the way he actually is.  If there was no medical reason for him to make an outburst like that and that is what people have to listen to on a regular basis, I would probably see if they would be open to heading over to Bill Ascol’s church just down the road in Owasso.

That was more than a hissy fit. A number of parts of his rant constituted a betrayal of trust. Unless some temporary mental derangement caused him to “go off” like that (and for which he has already made amends), he should be removed from his office to seek help. He’ll do it again unless he realizes how egregious his behavior really was.

I would seriously wonder if he had a stroke.

The study of ethics is an interesting and unique calling. I think the best ethic we need is the Gospel applied to one’s life. Otherwise, we can run into legalism quickly. However, on the other side we do need some ethics not to sanctify us, but for protection and integrity of who we are in Christ. That said, I’m sad to see this happen.

I want a Buick Enclave.
