Jay Z: The Bible and Qu’ran Speak of the Same God

The above clip is from an episode of Oprah’s Master Class which features “stories you’ve never heard from the people you thought you knew best.” Basically, the show is famous people sharing personal stories. And Jay Z shares an interesting belief about who God is. He thinks that “however you find God, that’s a fantastic thing” and “people that are reading the Qu’ran and people that are reading the Bible are really reading about the same person.”

Sadly, Jay Z is wrong about God and he is influencing many. And even more with Oprah’s reach.

If people simply find God where ever and however, who are they really finding? If differeJay Z on Oprahnt people find contradictory versions of God, who is right? How do you know? Jay Z is right about one thing – there is only one God.

However, the nature of the God of the Bible and Allah as found in the Qu’ran does not equate to one God. Christians hold that God is one in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Muslims hold to Allah’s oneness in a doctrine called Tawhid. To associate any other person with Allah is to commit the unpardonable sin of shirk. Christians commit shirk by their belief in the Trinity. The Bible and the Qu’ran reveal two different deities.

One of the reasons Jay Z believes there is a God is due to the how human body “works so perfectly.” He is right to point out the amazing human body God made. Yet, his lack of understanding reminds me of Paul addressing the Greeks at the Areopagus recorded in Acts 17.

23…what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you. 24 The God who made the world and everything in it—He is Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in shrines made by hands. 25 Neither is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives everyone life and breath and all things. 26 From one man He has made every nationality to live over the whole earth and has determined their appointed times and the boundaries of where they live...30 “Therefore, having overlooked the times of ignorance, God now commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because He has set a day when He is going to judge the world in righteousness by the Man He has appointed. He has provided proof of this to everyone by raising Him from the dead. (HCSB).

Jay Z rightly believes there is one God because the one God made him. God the Father has shown himself more fully in God the Son, Jesus Christ, by raising him from the dead. I pray that Jay Z and Oprah might turn from their sin and embrace this truth about Jesus.
