Merry Christmas: Christ is King

Santa has come once again. He comes in Jesus’ name. If there were no Christmas there would be no Santa. Yet, Santa remains popular regardless. The Christ in Christmas is Jesus. Yet, it is Santa who gets the focus and even makes the cover of The Wall Street Journal (Dec. 24th).

Why is Santa so popular? If a Santa jingle was written about Jesus is might sound a bit like this.

He knows when you are sleeping. He knows when you’re awake. He knows that you’ve been bad, not good! So repent for Jesus sake!

No wonder Jesus message isn’t as popular! Santa’s message is much easier when being good vs. bad is measured by one’s own standards. There is always someone else one to be compared to. Someone who is worse.

Being good for Santa is much easier. Being good for Christ on one’s own is impossible. It is understandable why the Christmas spirit is not thought of as the Holy Spirit. This Jesus whose birthday is celebrated tends to get passed by for a self-centered celebration. Yet, in general this is nothing new. However, there is still a holiday reminder.

Whether one celebrates Christmas or not, it is a time that reminds the world that God has come and is with us. Christmas without Jesus is like opening empty gift boxes. These empty boxes with pretty paper, ribbons and bows would offer packaging. Packaging that is showing off and protecting nothing. It would be excitement for the sake of excitement as these gifts are opened to an empty conclusion. All for nothing!

Thankfully, Jesus hasn’t passed us by.

A Savior was born and now reigns as King. He came to die in the place of sinners, taking the punishment of sins for those who trust in Him alone through faith alone. The gift of Jesus righteousness is one that no one deserves. Yet, He freely gives. Even more, Jesus commands those who have received His gift of salvation to share it with others that they too might come to know Him.

It is amazing really. This gift, the Gospel. It is freely given from Christ and freely received by sinners. It doesn’t need to be wrapped or put under a tree. It can be re-gifted indefinitely without giving it up. It never gets old, out dated or irrelevant. It can be given year round. It is the perfect gift!

Yes, this is Christmas.

Merry Christmas, Jesus Christ is King!

Why is it popular among “clergy” types to try their level best to ruin an otherwise wonderful holiday?

Merry Christmas regardless!
