I recently taught my children the meaning of an old, and all but lost saying—A rift in the lute. A lute is the predecessor to today’s guitar. The rift, or crack, is evidence of a problem that, if not addressed, threatens the instrument. Tennyson’s line in his epic poem Merlin and Vivien gives us the meaning: “It is the little rift within the lute that by-and-by will make the music mute, and ever widening slowly silence all.” What poetic …keep reading »
