Tiger Woods and the Cross

Tiger Woods makes news. Usually it is a victory or an amazing golf shot. Sometimes it is a loss.

Recently, the news has been about loss. Maybe the biggest loss of his career. Unfortunately, this loss is not a golf tournament. While it is uncertain if this will cost Woods’ any future sponsor earnings, this loss affects Woods’ family.

It may cost him his family.

The loss is Woods’ integrity in his marriage covenant. He betrayed his wife and kids with extramarital affair(s). This loss is not like a loss where Woods’ did not perform as well as somone else. Woods’ was not a victim in this situation, but one of the perpetrators.

Even some fans are disappointed.

One of Woods’ fans started a website called the First Church of Tiger Woods. However much actual “worship” of Woods’ actually took place on this website from a Christian perspective the “regilious” tones are disturbing. Given the recent news this site’s owner has over writted the words “First Church” so the title now reads “The Damnation of Tiger Woods.” Not only is this site now planning to shut down, but a post on December 1st states the following.

The events of the past few days have revealed Tiger to be a serial adulterer, a blatant liar, and a selfish coward.

Are these labels true of Tiger Woods? If so, are they any less true of people in general? Is this how a church should respond? A real church should actually respond with the cross by bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Tiger Woods was condemned already as John 3:18 states in the ESV,”Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.”

What is a Christian to say?

Tiger Woods is just like the rest of us. A sinner. Jesus stated in the Sermon on the Mount that simply looking with lust or anger towards another makes one guilty of adultry and murder. How many lies does it take to make one a liar? How many times does one have to put self first and hide it before being a selfish coward? Please do not lie again by denying committing these sins. It is clear that aside from golfing skill and money, Woods’ is just like everyone else in his humanity.

Christians, pray that Tiger Woods and family are reconciled to God through the gospel. Pray for reconciliation and forgiveness in their marriage. If Tiger and Elin Woods repent of their sins and turn to Jesus for forgiveness, they will truly understand reconciliation and forgiveness.

Pray for them.
